School Safety Tips

Lifting Techniques

  • Keep the load close to your body.
  • While lifting, keep your upper body erect.
  • Lift smoothly, don't jerk.
  • Don't twist and lift.
  • Encourace employees to stretch and exercise.

Additional Points:

  • Utilize carts and dollies
  • Get help from other employees when lifting heavy bulky items.
  • If possible, divide heavy loads into several smaller loads.
  • Store heavy items on the bottom shelves.
  • Use ladders or step stools to reach items on top shelves.

Slip, Trip, and Fall Prevention:

Avoiding Trips:

  • Carry loads that you can see over
  • Keep work areas well-lit
  • Don't clutter aisles or stairs
  • Be aware of dangerous tripping hazards such as power cords, torn carpet, floor mats, etc.

Avoiding Falls:

  • Don't jump from elevated surfaces. Lower yourself carefully from ladders, step stools, loading docks, etc.
  • Check lighting
  • Report any hazards such as damaged stairs and handrails
  • Don't store items on stairs or in aisles.

Avoiding Slips:

  • Practice safe walking skills
  • Work with caution in mind
  • Adhere to caution signs
  • Clean up spills right away
  • Don't let slip hazards accumulate on floors.
  • Wear slip resistant shoes.
  • Use caution when walking in snow, ice, and rain.
