What you can do for us

Literacy:  The Solution

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

One out of every five adults in Putnam County can’t fill out an application, read the newspaper or read directions on prescription medicines.  Theses adults are undereducated and are often embarrassed to ask for help which you can give!!

WHAT IS THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM?

The Volunteer Program is a FREE service to adults with low or nonexistent reading skills.  Sponsored by the Adult Education Program and the Adult Literacy Council, it provides these adults with instruction to meet their individual needs.

Privacy is assured with one-to-one instruction.  A trained volunteer tutor from the community is assigned to each adult.  Together, they decide when and where to meet.  The hours are set for both the student and tutor’s convenience.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?Our Volunteers

Adults with low or nonexistent reading skills, who are residents of Putnam County.  They should be 18 years of age, or older, and not enrolled in school.

WHEN DOES IT BEGIN?

Anytime.  The program continues throughout the year.  It is very flexible, and adults may join at any time.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

All instruction and materials are FREE!!

HOW CAN I HELP?

Refer adults who need basic reading instruction to our program.  We are also seeking volunteer tutors.  The only requirement to be a tutor is the ability to read yourself.  We will train you and provide you with materials.

“IF YOU MEET SOMEONE WHO CAN’T READ, YOU CAN LAUGH AT HIM, FEEL SORRY FOR HIM, IGNORE HIM, OR YOU CAN REACH OUT TO HIM. YOU CAN TEACH HIM TO READ.   WHAT IS YOUR DECISION??”
